A consumer unit upgrade is not just about replacing an old fuse box with a newer-looking board. The way it protects individual circuits can make a real difference when a fault occurs. When comparing an RCD vs RCBO consumer unit, the key question is simple: if one circuit develops a problem, how much of your property do you want to lose while the fault is investigated?
For many homeowners, landlords and business owners across Norfolk and Suffolk, the answer affects everyday convenience as well as electrical safety. An RCD-protected consumer unit can be a sound, compliant option in the right circumstances. An RCBO board usually offers more targeted protection and easier fault finding, but it normally comes at a higher initial cost. A qualified electrician can assess the installation and explain which arrangement is suitable before providing a clear quotation.
What does an RCD do in a consumer unit?
An RCD, or residual current device, is designed to reduce the risk of electric shock and fire caused by current leaking to earth. It continually compares the current flowing through the live and neutral conductors. If it detects an imbalance, such as electricity flowing through a person or through damaged cable insulation, it disconnects the supply quickly.
In a typical split-load consumer unit, several circuits are grouped beneath one RCD. For example, upstairs sockets, downstairs sockets and lighting circuits may share the same device, while other circuits are protected by a second RCD. Each individual circuit also has its own MCB, or miniature circuit breaker, to protect against overloads and short circuits.
This arrangement can provide the required additional protection for many domestic circuits. However, there is a practical drawback. If a fault occurs on one circuit, the RCD may trip and switch off every circuit connected to it. A faulty outdoor light fitting, for instance, could leave several socket circuits without power until the issue is found and resolved.
What is an RCBO consumer unit?
An RCBO combines the functions of an MCB and an RCD in one device. Rather than one RCD protecting a group of circuits, each circuit has its own individual residual current and overcurrent protection.
With an RCBO consumer unit, a fault on the garage supply should only disconnect the garage supply. The kitchen sockets, boiler, lighting and other circuits can remain live, assuming they are not affected by the same fault. This selective operation is one of the main reasons RCBO boards are often chosen for modern homes, rental properties and commercial premises where avoiding unnecessary loss of power matters.
An RCBO does not make an installation fault-free, nor does it remove the need for professional testing. It simply limits the impact of many faults to the circuit where they occur. That can make a significant difference at 9pm when a single appliance trips the protection and you need to identify the source safely.
RCD vs RCBO consumer unit: the practical differences
The most noticeable difference is what happens after a trip. In an RCD split-load board, one fault can affect multiple circuits. In an RCBO board, the affected circuit is normally isolated on its own. This can be particularly useful where a property has a freezer, fish tank, medical equipment, security system, home office or heating controls that should not lose power because of an unrelated fault elsewhere.
Fault finding is generally more straightforward with RCBOs. The tripped device identifies the circuit involved, giving an electrician a useful starting point. With a split-load RCD board, several circuits may need to be checked before the source is located. This does not mean every RCD trip is difficult to diagnose, but it can take longer, particularly where several appliances are connected.
Cost is the main trade-off. RCBO devices cost more than standard MCBs, so an all-RCBO consumer unit will usually have a higher materials cost than a split-load RCD board. The price difference should be considered alongside the property’s needs, the number of circuits, the condition of the existing wiring and the likely inconvenience of losing several circuits at once.
For a small, straightforward property with limited circuits, a split-load arrangement may be appropriate where designed and installed correctly. For larger homes, houses with extensions, properties with EV chargers, rental accommodation and many commercial settings, the additional resilience of RCBO protection is often a sensible investment.
Why circuit separation matters
A well-designed consumer unit is about more than choosing between RCDs and RCBOs. Circuits should be arranged so that a single fault does not create an unreasonable safety risk or major disruption.
Lighting is a good example. If all lighting circuits are grouped under one device and it trips, the whole property could be left in darkness. Separating upstairs and downstairs lighting, or arranging circuits across different protective devices, can reduce this risk. The same principle applies to smoke alarms, boilers, refrigeration, security equipment and essential business equipment.
An RCBO board supports this approach because each circuit has its own protection. Yet good design still matters. An electrician will consider the use of the building, the number of circuits, cable sizes, earthing arrangements, load requirements and the condition of the installation before deciding on the best layout.
Protection type matters too
Not all RCDs and RCBOs are identical. Modern electrical equipment can create types of residual current that older devices may not detect reliably. Appliances with electronic controls, induction hobs, washing machines, heat pumps, EV chargers and solar equipment all need consideration when selecting protective devices.
Type A RCDs or RCBOs are commonly specified in modern installations because they can detect both alternating residual current and pulsating DC residual current. Type AC devices have more limited detection capability and may not be suitable for certain modern loads. The correct choice depends on the circuit and the manufacturer’s instructions for connected equipment.
This is one reason a consumer unit should never be selected solely on the basis of the cheapest quote or the number of ways available. It needs to be designed around the property and installed in line with the current edition of BS 7671, the IET Wiring Regulations.
What else should be included with a consumer unit upgrade?
A replacement consumer unit is an opportunity to assess the wider safety of the installation. Before fitting a new board, a competent electrician should test the existing circuits to establish whether they are suitable for connection to it. A new consumer unit cannot correct damaged cables, poor joints, inadequate earthing or unsuitable circuit design elsewhere in the property.
Modern boards may also include surge protection devices, known as SPDs. These help protect sensitive electronic equipment from transient overvoltages, which can result from switching events or issues on the electricity network. Whether surge protection is required should be assessed as part of the design process, rather than treated as an afterthought.
The condition of main protective bonding is equally important. Gas and water services may need correctly sized bonding conductors where applicable. Earthing and bonding are fundamental parts of electrical safety, and they should be checked before any consumer unit upgrade is completed.
Is RCBO always the better choice?
RCBO protection is often the preferred option where budget allows, largely because it improves circuit separation and makes faults easier to contain. However, it is not automatically the right answer in every situation. The consumer unit must be compatible with the installation, the protective devices must be correctly selected and the existing circuits must pass the necessary testing.
A split-load RCD board can still be a suitable solution when properly designed. The important point is that the decision should be based on safety, compliance and how the property is used, rather than a like-for-like comparison of headline prices.
For landlords, the ability to limit disruption can be particularly valuable. For homeowners, it may mean a kitchen appliance fault does not switch off the heating controls or home office. For a small business, it can help keep essential circuits operating while a non-essential circuit is isolated.
Choosing the right electrician for the work
Consumer unit replacement is not a DIY task. It involves inspection, testing, certification and, where required, notification under Part P of the Building Regulations. The finished installation should be clearly labelled, fully tested and supplied with the relevant electrical certification.
