
Is Main Earth Bonding Required in Your Home?

A new consumer unit, EV charger or kitchen renovation can reveal an issue that has been hidden for years: the property’s gas or water services have no visible bonding. So, is main earth bonding required? In many UK properties, yes. But the correct answer depends on the incoming services, the earthing arrangement and whether metal pipework could introduce an earth potential into the building.
Main earth bonding is not a cosmetic upgrade or an optional extra added to a quotation. It is a vital safety measure that helps reduce dangerous touch voltages if an electrical fault occurs. A qualified electrician should assess it as part of any significant electrical work, inspection or consumer unit upgrade.
What main earth bonding actually does
Main protective bonding connects certain metal services entering a building to the installation’s main earthing terminal, often located close to the consumer unit or electricity meter position. These services commonly include metallic gas and water pipes, although each service must be assessed individually.
The purpose is to keep exposed metal parts at a similar electrical potential during a fault. Without adequate bonding, a fault elsewhere in the electrical installation could leave a metal pipe at a different voltage to other earthed parts of the property. Someone touching a tap, radiator or gas pipe while also in contact with another conductive surface could then receive an electric shock.
Bonding does not make pipework an earth electrode, and it should never be treated as a substitute for a proper earthing system. It works alongside the property’s earthing arrangement, protective devices and circuit wiring to support safe fault disconnection.
Is main earth bonding required under UK wiring rules?
BS 7671, the IET Wiring Regulations, requires main protective bonding where extraneous-conductive-parts are present. In plain English, an extraneous-conductive-part is a conductive item, such as a metal service pipe, that can bring an electrical potential from outside the installation into the property.
This means bonding is often required for metal gas or water service pipework. However, it is not safe to assume that every pipe needs a bonding conductor simply because it is metal. A qualified electrician needs to establish whether the pipework is genuinely extraneous, how the service enters the building and whether plastic sections isolate it from earth.
The rules also apply differently depending on the work being carried out. New installations and alterations should meet the current edition of BS 7671. Existing installations are not automatically unsafe because they were installed to an earlier standard, but missing or inadequate bonding may be recorded during an Electrical Installation Condition Report, particularly where it creates a risk or affects the safety of proposed work.
Earthing and bonding are different things
The terms are often used interchangeably, but they have different jobs.
Earthing provides a connection between the electrical installation and earth, helping protective devices operate when a fault develops. The supply type might be TN-C-S, commonly called PME, TN-S or TT. Each arrangement has different characteristics and must be properly verified.
Main protective bonding connects metal services to the main earthing terminal so that accessible conductive parts remain at broadly the same potential during fault conditions. Supplementary bonding, where used, is local bonding between conductive parts in a particular area. It was once common in bathrooms but is not automatically required in modern installations where disconnection times and protective measures are achieved.
A green-and-yellow cable clipped to a pipe does not, by itself, prove the installation is safe. The conductor must be the correct size, connected in the correct location, securely terminated and labelled. The electrician must also confirm that it is connected to a sound main earthing terminal.
Which services may need bonding?
Metal gas and water services are the most familiar examples, but the assessment is wider than looking for copper pipe. A metal oil pipe, structural steelwork, a metallic heating service or other conductive service entering a building may also need consideration.
Plastic plumbing has changed the picture in many homes. A water pipe may be copper inside the property but connected to a plastic incoming service, meaning it may not introduce an external earth potential. Conversely, a small section of plastic pipe does not automatically remove the need for bonding if there is another conductive route. The only reliable approach is testing and professional assessment.
Gas pipework deserves particular care. The bonding connection is normally made on the consumer side of the gas meter, in an appropriate accessible position, rather than attached to the meter itself. Gas work must remain the responsibility of a Gas Safe registered engineer, while electrical bonding should be inspected or installed by a competent electrician. Neither trade should make assumptions about the other’s work.
When missing bonding is most likely to be found
Main bonding frequently comes to light when an electrician is carrying out work that makes the condition of the wider installation relevant. Common examples include a consumer unit replacement, an Electrical Installation Condition Report, an extension, a full or partial rewire, and EV charger installation.
A modern consumer unit with RCD or RCBO protection is a worthwhile safety improvement, but it cannot compensate for an inadequate earthing and bonding arrangement. Before upgrading a fuseboard, an electrician should verify the earthing conductor, earthing arrangement and main protective bonding. If remedial work is needed, it should be explained clearly and included in the scope of work.
EV charging is another important example. Many homes in Norfolk and Suffolk have PME supplies, and EV charge points require specific protection against certain supply faults, including an open PEN fault where applicable. Correct main bonding remains essential, but it is only one part of a compliant EV charging design. The charger, supply characteristics, cable route and protective measures all need to be considered together.
Signs that your property should be checked
You may be able to see bonding conductors near your gas meter, internal stop tap or consumer unit. They are usually green-and-yellow insulated cables, often fitted with a labelled clamp. Their absence does not prove that bonding is missing, as the connection may be located elsewhere, but it is a sensible reason to ask for an inspection.
A check is particularly worthwhile if you have moved into an older property, had plumbing altered, replaced a metal water service with plastic pipe, noticed loose or corroded bonding clamps, or are planning electrical improvements. Landlords and property managers should also consider bonding as part of a wider electrical safety review between tenancies or when an EICR identifies observations requiring attention.
Do not fit a clamp or run a cable yourself. Incorrectly connected bonding can leave a hazard unresolved, damage pipework or interfere with other services. The work needs appropriate testing, verification and certification where required.
What a qualified electrician will assess
A proper assessment is more than a visual check. The electrician will identify the supply earthing arrangement, inspect the main earthing terminal and measure or verify the continuity of existing bonding conductors. They will examine incoming metal services, the location and condition of clamps, conductor sizes and whether the connections are accessible and correctly labelled.
They will also consider recent changes to the property. A new boiler, relocated gas meter, replacement stop tap, extension or garage conversion can alter pipe routes and leave an old bonding connection in an unsuitable position. If work is required, the quotation should set out what will be installed or corrected rather than relying on vague references to “earthing work”.

Do not confuse compliance with a quick visual fix
It is tempting to judge the installation by whether there is a green-and-yellow cable somewhere near a pipe. That can be misleading. A cable may be undersized, disconnected at the main earthing terminal, clamped to an unsuitable section of pipe or no longer appropriate after plumbing changes.
Equally, not every older property without obvious bonding needs immediate emergency work. The urgency depends on the electrical supply, the services present, the condition of the installation and the results of testing. A competent electrician can distinguish between a straightforward improvement, work needed before an upgrade can proceed and a condition requiring prompt attention.
