How to Plan Kitchen Electrical Layout Safely

A new kitchen can look perfectly planned on paper, then become frustrating to use because the toaster has nowhere sensible to plug in or the lighting leaves the worktop in shadow. Knowing how to plan kitchen electrical layout early prevents those expensive last-minute changes and helps ensure your new space is safe, practical and ready for modern appliances.

Electrical planning should begin before units are ordered and walls are closed up. Your kitchen designer, builder and electrician need to work from the same plan, with appliances, cabinetry, plumbing and lighting considered together. This is especially important in renovations, where an existing installation may not have the capacity or circuit arrangement a new kitchen requires.

Start with the kitchen plan, not the sockets

First, confirm the final layout of cabinets, tall units, island, sink, hob and appliances. Ask for a dimensioned kitchen drawing, including the door swings of appliances and the opening direction of cupboards. A socket hidden behind an integrated fridge, for example, may be inaccessible when you need to isolate the appliance.

Mark where you expect to prepare food, make drinks, charge devices and use portable equipment. Think about ordinary daily routines rather than just the showroom appearance. If the coffee machine, microwave and air fryer are likely to share one section of worktop, that area will need more useful socket outlets than a rarely used corner.

It also helps to decide which appliances are fixed and which may change. A future boiling-water tap, wine cooler, dishwasher or under-cabinet lighting system can be much easier to accommodate while the kitchen is being fitted than after the decorating is complete.

List every appliance and how it will be supplied

A kitchen electrical layout is not simply a matter of adding plenty of plug sockets. Some appliances require dedicated supplies, isolation arrangements or higher-capacity circuits. Your electrician will assess the manufacturer’s instructions, the appliance load and the condition of the existing installation before confirming the right design.

Create a list of everything that will need power, including items that can be overlooked:

  • oven, hob, extractor hood and microwave

  • fridge-freezer, dishwasher, washing machine and tumble dryer

  • integrated appliances such as wine coolers or warming drawers

  • lighting inside cabinets, beneath wall units and around plinths

  • boiler controls, water-treatment equipment and waste-disposal units

  • USB charging points, television screens, smart speakers and Wi-Fi equipment

Induction hobs deserve particular attention. They can have a significant electrical demand, and the required supply depends on the exact model. Do not assume an existing cooker circuit is suitable simply because there was previously an electric cooker in the property.

The same applies to an island. An island may need power for sockets, a pop-up outlet, a downdraft extractor or lighting, but the cable route needs planning before the floor is laid. In some properties, this can affect whether a feature is worthwhile or whether another solution is more practical.

Plan circuits before choosing finishes

A well-designed kitchen normally separates key loads so one fault does not leave the entire room unusable. The precise arrangement depends on the property, consumer unit capacity, cable routes and appliances involved, but the electrician may consider separate circuits for cooking equipment, sockets and lighting.

Dedicated circuits are often appropriate for higher-load fixed appliances. This reduces the chance of overloading a general socket circuit and makes fault finding more straightforward in future. However, there is no one-size-fits-all circuit plan. A compact kitchen in a modern flat may need a different approach from a large family kitchen in an older Norfolk cottage with limited existing capacity.

This is also the right stage to assess the consumer unit. A kitchen extension, new induction hob or additional circuits may reveal that an older fuseboard is no longer suitable for the work planned. Any alterations must be designed, installed and tested in line with current requirements, rather than adapted around an outdated arrangement.

Position sockets where they are genuinely useful

Worktop sockets should be easy to reach without trailing cables across the sink, hob or preparation area. As a practical rule, allow for more outlets than you think you need in the main working zones. Double sockets often make sense, but their position matters more than the quantity.

Avoid placing outlets where they will be blocked by splashbacks, open cupboard doors, tall appliances or fixed furniture. Agree the height and alignment with the kitchen fitter before walls are plastered or tiled. A small change in unit height can otherwise leave accessories misaligned with the finished kitchen.

Socket outlets and switches near water need particularly careful consideration. There is no substitute for a proper assessment of the room, appliance instructions and cable routes. Keeping electrical accessories sensibly away from sink splash zones is good practice, while appliances such as dishwashers and washing machines should have accessible means of isolation, often located in an adjacent cupboard rather than directly behind the appliance.

Do not forget the less obvious locations. A socket in a pantry, utility cupboard or breakfast bar can make the room more convenient. If you are including a seating area, consider whether residents will want to charge a mobile phone or laptop there. For landlords and property managers, durable accessories and sensible locations can also reduce avoidable call-outs between tenancies.

Build lighting into the electrical layout

One central ceiling fitting rarely provides enough light for a working kitchen. Good kitchen lighting is layered: general lighting for the room, focused light for worktops, and optional feature lighting for atmosphere.

Ceiling downlights can give even general coverage when correctly spaced, but too many can make a room feel harsh and add unnecessary fittings to maintain. Pendant lights may suit an island or dining table, while under-cabinet lighting is particularly effective because it directs light onto the worktop without casting shadows from the person standing there.

Think carefully about controls. Separate switching for main lights, task lighting and decorative lighting gives more flexibility than a single switch by the door. Dimmers can work well in dining areas, provided the selected lamps and fittings are compatible. If you want smart controls, specify this at the start, as some systems need particular wiring or compatible fittings.

Extractor fans and cooker hoods also need early coordination. Their electrical supply, duct route and position must work with the kitchen design, structural constraints and ventilation requirements. Leaving this until late in the project can result in compromised cabinetry or visible trunking.

Allow for safety, access and future maintenance

A neat installation is not only about hiding cables. Isolation switches, connection points and protective devices should remain accessible for servicing and emergency use. Appliances may eventually need replacing, so avoid designs that require removing fitted units just to reach a connection.

Where cables run through walls, floors or cupboards, they must be installed in recognised safe zones and protected as required. This is one reason kitchen electrics should never be treated as an afterthought for a general tradesperson. Electrical work has to be designed around the building fabric as well as the finished appearance.

For work in England, electrical installations must comply with Building Regulations requirements, including Part P where applicable. Certain work may need notification, and all relevant work should be inspected, tested and certificated. A qualified electrician can confirm what applies to your project and provide the appropriate documentation once the work is complete.

Coordinate the electrician, kitchen fitter and builder

The smoothest kitchen projects follow a clear order. The electrical design is agreed after the kitchen layout is finalised, first-fix cables are installed before plastering and units, and second-fix accessories and light fittings are completed once the kitchen is ready.

Avoid asking an electrician to work from a rough sketch if the cabinet plan is still likely to change. Even moving the sink by a small amount can affect sockets, lighting, appliance connections and plumbing. A site meeting before first fix can prevent misunderstandings and give everyone a chance to check measurements against the actual room.

Photographs of cable routes before plastering can also be useful for your records. Keep electrical certificates with your property documents, particularly if you are a landlord, managing agent or planning to sell in the future.

When to involve a qualified electrician

Bring in an electrician as soon as you have a proposed kitchen plan, especially if you are adding an extension, replacing a consumer unit, installing an induction hob or changing the position of major appliances. Early advice can identify supply limitations, practical cable routes and likely costs before you commit to the final design.
